Financial Derivatives, Net is a Latin Macro Watch indicator from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) that captures the net transactions in derivative financial instruments between residents and nonresidents recorded in the financial account of the balance of payments. It includes forwards, futures, options, swaps and employee stock options, valued at market prices; a net positive position indicates that the market value of derivative contracts in favor of residents exceeds obligations to nonresidents. The series supports analysts, policymakers and researchers monitoring external financial flows and derivative positions across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Coverage

The indicator covers 10 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean at annual, monthly and quarterly frequency, spanning 1994–2026. Values are available in millions of USD, as a share of GDP (% of GDP) and year-to-date (YTD), with derived transformations including 3-, 6- and 12-month moving averages (MA3, MA6, MA12) and month-over-month, quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year percentage changes (MoM %, QoQ %, YoY %).

Sources

Data are compiled from national central banks and statistics agencies, including Banco Central de Chile, Banco Central do Brasil, Banco de Mexico (Banxico) and INDEC - Argentina. The series is curated and standardized by the Latin Macro Watch dataset on the IDB Open Data portal.
