The Industrial Production Index measures the output of the industrial sector, typically comprising manufacturing, mining and utilities. It reflects changes in real production volumes and is widely used to assess short-term economic performance and business-cycle dynamics across Latin America and the Caribbean. The precise coverage may vary across countries. The series is published in the Latin Macro Watch dataset maintained by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Coverage

Data are available for 11 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean at annual, monthly, and quarterly frequency, spanning 1990 to 2026. Values are provided as an index, including an index rebased to 2023 = 100, plus year-to-date (YTD) and seasonally adjusted series, each available as average-of-period and end-of-period variants. Standard transformations include moving averages (MA3, MA6, MA12) and month-over-month (MoM %), quarter-over-quarter (QoQ %), and year-over-year (YoY %) growth rates.

Sources

Figures are compiled from official national statistical agencies, including INEGI - Mexico, INDEC - Argentina, Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas (INE) de Chile, Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada, and Banco de la República de Colombia, among other statistical offices across the region.

Data notes

What does the Industrial Production Index measure?

It measures the output of the industrial sector, typically comprising manufacturing, mining and utilities, reflecting changes in real production volumes. The precise coverage may vary across countries.

How many countries and which periods are covered?

The index covers 11 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean from 1990 to 2026, at annual, monthly, and quarterly frequency.

What units and transformations are available?

Values come as an index (including a 2023 = 100 rebased index), YTD, and seasonally adjusted series, each in average-of-period and end-of-period variants. Transformations include MA3, MA6, MA12 moving averages and MoM %, QoQ %, and YoY % growth rates.

Where does the data come from?

Figures are compiled from official national statistical agencies, including INEGI - Mexico, INDEC - Argentina, Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas (INE) de Chile, Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada, and Banco de la República de Colombia.

Are any series spliced from different sources?

Yes. For Argentina the industrial production series is spliced: the historical segment is INDEC's discontinued Estimador Mensual Industrial (EMI), and the current segment is the Índice de Producción Industrial Manufacturero (IPI manufacturero).

How do I cite this indicator?

Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Latin Macro Watch — "Industrial Production Index". data.iadb.org/dataset/latin-macro-watch-dataset.
