Local Currency Deposits
Local currency deposits are the deposits of residents held in depository institutions and denominated in the domestic currency. They are a key measure of domestic savings, financial intermediation and the currency composition of deposits, useful for analyzing deposit dollarization and financial-sector stability. This Latin Macro Watch indicator, published by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on data.iadb.org, brings comparable local-currency deposit series together for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Coverage
The indicator covers 20 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean at annual, monthly and quarterly frequency over the period 1990–2026. Values are available in millions of domestic currency, millions of USD, as a share of GDP, as a share of M2 and as a share of total deposits, with end-of-period, average-of-period, CPI-deflated constant-price and seasonally adjusted variants. Transformations include moving averages (MA3, MA6, MA12) and month-over-month, quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year percentage changes. The indicator is constructed from the domestic-currency components of demand and time deposits for residents and non-residents.
Sources
Figures are compiled from national central banks and statistical agencies, including the Banco de Mexico (Banxico), the Banco Central de Chile, the Banco Central de la República Argentina, the Banco Central del Ecuador and the Central Bank of The Bahamas, among others. IDB harmonizes these national sources for cross-country comparison.
